PAULA TEMPLE (R&S), UK
A self-confessed Noisician, Paula Temple obliterated 2014 with ‘Deathvox’, her second monumental release for the legendary label R&S. Her debut ‘Colonized’ EP made one of biggest statements in 2013 for uncompromising techno, followed by remixes for avant-electronic acts The Knife, Perera Elsewhere and Planningtorock. Such refreshing high-voltage output has rapidly placed Paula Temple at the forefront of new techno.
Previously she released ‘Speck of The Future’ appearing on Jeff Mill’s ‘Exhibitionist’ album and techno vanguard Chris McCormack’s Materials label. In her early days, Paula Temple co-developed the innovative live performance midi controller MXF8, one of the first of its kind, which she took on the ‘Mind and Machine’ tour for three years.
Her HYBRID live/dj sets have become a sensation in such scene bastions as Tresor, Berghain and I Love Techno. Her first full live AV show NONAGON with Jem The Misfit, set in 9 parts, was premiered at ADE 2014 receiving high acclaim.
2015 has already witnessed stellar performances at BLOC, Kozzmozz and London’s Convergence Festival, with a forthcoming mini tour of USA including two dates at Movement Detroit. A double remix for Fink has yet again demonstrated why Paula Temple is much sought after for remix productions. For her record label Noise Manifesto she has just launched a very special and unique collaboration series called Decon/Recon with select showcase events only. Her third release for R&S Records is currently in production at the studio, plus a split release for a Berlin based label to be revealed later this year.
SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER (R&S, Clone Records), UK
In the year 2257, Planet Earth was invaded by an energy seeking race of aliens known as the Pulsovians, sparking a galactic war that lasted over two years. Sadly, the Pulsovian technology was much more advanced than that of the humans and Earth was lost. The Pulsovians drained the energy from the sun, turning it into a Pulsar. Earth died soon after, leaving the humans no choice but to flee into outer space to find a new home.
For over 75 years the last remnants of mankind lived aboard their escape vessels. It wasn’t until the year 2334 that a man named Max Tiraquon discovered a distant planet in Mikrosector-50 of the deep space grid that was suitable for human habitation. Shortly after the discovery of Mikrosector-50, Max Tiraquon founded the Tiraquon Security Council as the first government of mankind’s new home. A man known as Mr. 8040 was made the Deputy Space Dimension Controller of the council. By day, Mr. 8040 and Max Tiraquon defend the boundaries of the security barrier from astro bandits and rebels who seek to destroy the barrier and free the citizens of Mikrosector-50. By night, Mr. 8040 lives a secret life… Travelling outside the barrier into deep space where no radar can detect him, Mr. 8040 creates music using ancient earth technologies alone in his Electropod.
When ready he ventures deeper into space to uncharted colonies where music is accepted. He plays in illegal night clubs on distant moons and alien proto-spheres. When asked to describe his music, Mr. 8040 doesn’t really have much to say. The only way to describe it is… GALACTIC FUNK.
ALEX SMOKE (R&S, Hum + Haw), UK
A new breed of electronic music producer, blurring the boundaries between Electronica, Techno, Classical and Hip Hop. Alex Smoke’s music evolves in new directions with every project he undertakes regardless of genre, both on the dancefloor and with his renowned live sets. This is none more so prevalent than with his latest audio visual project ‘Wraetlic’, working with shorter song structures and placing his contorted vocals at the forefront of his tactful production.
LAKKER (R&S, Stroboscopic Artefacts), IR
Since the early 2000s, the Irish duo of Dara (aka Arad) and Ian (aka Eomac) have been painting intricate sonic tapestries ranging from haunting Arctic soundscapes to bass driven warehouse weight as Lakker. With releases on R&S, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Blueprint, and Killekill and support from the likes of Aphex Twin, Laurent Garnier, Lucy, Blawan and Surgeon, they are firmly rooted in the techno world however May 11, 2015 ‘Tundra’ LP on R&S will showcase the expansiveness and dexterity as producers pushing electronic music forward without any genre tag.
Manchester’s Joe McBride pens elaborate, emotive & intellectual soundscapes, drawing in influences across a spectrum of bass culture and electronica. Having released with Exit Records, Brownswood, Styrax, Auxiliary & Med School, as well as remixes for Model 500, Snow Patrol, Lowb & a plethora more, Synkro has most recently found a home at R&S sister label ‘Apollo’. Major support for Synkro’s music has come from names like Chris Coco, Giles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Prefuse 73 and dBridge. A truly staple artist in the timeline of UK Bass.
MIND AGAINST (Life & Death), IT
They carved a path for themselves with a series of three EP’s on Life and Death. Their debut ‘Atlant’, the follow up ‘Avalon’ and the latter ‘Strange Days’ were let loose to critical acclaim. Since then calling the label their home, the duo now takes part in the management and A&R.
2015 came with a celebratory occasion marked by a collaborative EP with Belgian producer Locked Groove, released on Hotflush Recordings. The duo released in July their new single ‘Vertere’ on Life and Death, where they joined forces with Italian techno artist and friend Somne.
The biggest cliche of a “sound that’s hard to pin down”, is realer than gravity when it comes to Mind Against. They coax on psychedelic hooks of the 1980s and dance floor anthems bound traditionally to European soil. This backdrop makes for releases and performances that do well against any canvas
Sourcing tracks and samples became an obsession: from this was born a compulsion to write, experiment & develop original music that could be equally human, equally electronic.
Vaal exists in the dark of the city: the secretive curtained room that you can never quite peer into, the dark pulsating dancefloors of the underground. Vaal has nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears & sweat.
Vaal is electronic, & Vaal is a Baastard.
