# NASTIA
“I love my hobby, which transformed into my profession and my way of life during recent years. My aim is to see as many people as possible on the dancefloor and to dance with them, leading the mood with what unites us all – music. I am what I do.”A Ukrainian girl through and through, Anastasia Topolskaia otherwise known as Nastia was born in a tiny village and had no musical education growing up. Her love of dancing took her to the city of Donetsk and in 2005 she landed a job as a dancer in the best club Donetsk had to offer. Whilst experiencing the Donetsk nightlife, it became clear to Nastia that she should start learning how to DJ and before long she became fiercely passionate about being on the decks. In 2006, Nastia quickly gained experience as a promoter, stage manager and radio show host. Whilst working at festival Kazantip for five consecutive years, she became a weekly resident at the infamous and popular radio station chain, KISS FM Ukraine. Leaving her beloved Ukraine behind, Nastia first hit the road in 2009. Since then, she has been touring non-stop, playing in many cities throughout Europe and further abroad to Japan, Africa and South America, leaving her mark at Watergate Berlin, Elrow Barcelona, Enter at ADE in Amsterdam and The Warehouse Project in Manchester. With residencies at Circo Loco, FUSE and Arma17 in her native Ukraine under her belt, in 2013 Nastia felt it was time to launch her own label and radio show, named Propaganda. The latest of a string of DJ’s to come out of Eastern Europe, Nastia is known for her mixing capabilities and she incorporates underground, cutting edge techno and tech-house into her sets. Not one to be easily defined, Nastia has the ability to keep listeners on their toes through her effortless mixing skills. Constantly changing her sets around, picking House over Techno one summer, then Drum & Bass over dub the next, she always plays tracks that make her move. Tapping into her dancing past, it’s her goal to make partygoers move and enjoy themselves. Previously playing acclaimed dance venue, Fabric London alongside Ricardo Villalobos, Ben Klock and Prosumer last summer,Nastia will ascend to Fabric’s Room One once more this year alongside techno heavyweight Richie Hawtin.
# SHIFTED
To understand Guy Brewer’s creative output is perhaps more of a perceptive outlook onto the surroundings that have harnessed and fertilized such a mutable yield – a progressive change that is at all times moving forward in its’ impulsivity and temperament. In that dynamic of change is the very constant that has defined the diverse artistic range in sound artistry that Brewer has come to master in his own right. After the dissolution of his esteemed group Commix, Brewer uprooted his UK drum n bass beginnings and transplanted himself to Berlin, where reinvention and transformation is of second nature to its’ inhabitants that restlessly seek and speak through artistic language. The project Shifted began to take form in this realm of new possibility, an anonymous figure allowing shape amidst a new-found blank slate of sound. As much as this tabula rasa was cultivating a profound dexterity within the genres of techno, inherent know-how inevitably surfaced as nature does usually so influence nurture, and Brewer’s compositional command (arguably honed throughout his seasoned years in the UK) came back to positively haunt him in no time. This reclamation of a past, worthy of upholding into the future, has since proven a positive sweep into the magnetism of his music as a whole. Since inception, Brewer’s Shifted moniker has grown into a unique yet encompassing mastery of sound and space, texture and tonalities — a pure spirit of experimentalism with a foundational functionality. From his debut on Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver label, to Dominick Fernow’s (Vatican Shadow) Bed Of Nails and to his recent recordings for his own smartly curated imprint, Avian (home to techno experiments from Alessandro Cortini’s Skarn, Peder Mannerfelt, SHXCXCHCXSH, and more) Brewer’s work radiates in its’ capacity to meld to context and circumstance without artistic compromise, and at once to color outside purist lines, pushing boundaries and provoking thought in a call to progressive techno, electronic, noise and experimental music as a whole. With the intention of pushing various forays further, Brewer has also birthed numerous other projects, notably the techno-drone outfit Covered In Sand (with releases on Avian’s sister label, Mira, Hospital Productions and more) and the doomy soundtrack wielding of Alexander Lewis (home on Blackest Ever Black, Vereker’s Endagered Species). In this versatility there is a steadfast dedication to a perpetual movement forward — arguably leaving Brewer to embody a pure, unadulterated spirit of what it means to be an electronic musician: a rebel artist treading new territories with a fascination and fixation to craft brilliance with a new noise.
# ALBERT VAN ABBE LIVE
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes you catch the eyes of a man as you pass him by in the street and you instantly get a feeling that this is not someone to mess with. It has nothing to do with aggression or malice – in fact, it’s never the loud, cocky guys with the attitude and the practiced “cool” walk and talk. No, it’s the calm, steady gaze of someone who has seen and experienced things and learned from them. Indeed, it does not happen often, but it’s even more unusual to get that same feeling conveyed to you through art, literature or music. Albert van Abbe is that unusual.
Albert van Abbe started making music and performing live in 2001 but when listening to his work, there are certain elements that rather makes you think of 1901. Melancholic whispers of Stravinsky, Ravel or Schönberg, reduced and concentrated to rhythmical and melodic patterns, sometimes breaking free of the constraints set by arpeggiators or sequencers. Perhaps this otherly, nonconformist way of thinking and doing music is most evident in van Abbe’s live performances, and he is in fact one of the very few Dutch techno live acts having performed Berghain, Awakenings & ADE just to name a few.
But there’s something else that sets him apart from the vast majority of his contemporary techno colleagues, something that’s harder to pin down. There’s so much electronic music these days that is either intentionally underproduced; grimy, harsh and simplistic, or overproduced; tumescent, hyper-compressed and dense. Albert van Abbe’s music is distinctively neither. There is always air in his productions; infinite skies, passing clouds, thin vapour rising from open fields… visions of mountain tops or endless tree crowns half covered in mist. There is always place for you within his music to fill your lungs to the brim with this cleansing air. A feeling of unrestrained, reflecting Albert van Abbe’s own recalcitrant and anti-authoritative personality. To put it simple: It’s music with a view.
Besides performing, producing music and DJing, Albert van Abbe also currently operates two record labels, No Comment and VANABBE. He has also released music on Semantica, Deep Sound Channel, Trolldans, ESHU & Curle.
